VERMILION UKRAINIAN DANCE FESTIVAL

INFORMATION

Festival Venue: Lakeland College (5707 College Dr, Vermilion, AB)

Entry deadline: Friday January 9, 2026

Entry Forms:

  • Each dance may only be entered once in the festival. 

  • One dance per form. 

  • Please fill the entry form in its entirety, including names and ages. 

  • Entry forms are to be completed and submitted by the dance instructors.  Payment can be made by e-transfer to vucatreasurer@gmail.com or a cheque payable to VUCA.

  • Instructional hours per week per group has been requested on the summary sheet to be used when determining scholarships. 

  • There will be no refunds on cancellations. 

 

Time Limits have been set as follows:

  • Solos……………………………........2 minutes

  • Duets………………………………….2 minutes

  • Small Groups………………………4 minutes

  • Large Groups………………………5 minutes

  • Hopak…………………………………7 minutes

*We ask that time limits are adhered to in fairness to every dancer, a $50 fine will be charged for over time dances*

 

Age Limits:

  • The age of the dancer shall be considered as of December 31, 2025. 

  • For duets age is determined by the older dancer. 

  • The group age is determined by averaging their age in years to the nearest year. 

  • Novice entries (first year of Ukrainian dance instruction) - group entries 75% or greater are to be first year dancers.

  • Proof of age may be required upon request. 

 

Classification and categories may be adjusted according to entries and at the discretion of the Festival Committee. 

 

Fees:

  • Solo..................................................................$22.00/dancer

  • Duet………………………………………………….........$22.00/dancer

  • Small Group (3-7 dancers)..............…………..$16.00/dancer

  • Large Group (8 or more dancers)…………….$16.00/dancer

 

Music:

  • Is to be cued by the instructor or parent designate. 

  • iPhone, Android, and Laptop devices are encouraged. 

  • The music will be played through the theatre stereo system. 

  • Quality of music and accuracy of track is the responsibility of the instructor.

  • Remember to turn phones to airplane safe mode to avoid any alerts or phone calls during a performance. 

  • A Bluetooth speaker with current iPhone and android connections will be provided in the practice area.

 

Backstage:

  • It is the instructor’s responsibility to ensure their group is prepared and waiting backstage prior to their performance time and to assist them on and off stage. 

  • The Vermilion Festival is not responsible in any capacity for transporting the dancers back and forth to the stage or that they are in their right spot.

  • We encourage instructors and dancers to arrive early to ensure there is adequate time for everything to run smoothly. 

 

Theatre Rules:

  • Photography and video recording is not permitted within the theatre during performances . This action could result in disqualification of the group. 

  • Turn off cell phones prior to entering the theatre and please leave them in your pocket or purse.

  • Please refrain from excessive cheering during performances. 

  • Theatre entry and exit will be permitted only between dance numbers or session breaks. 

 

Dressing Rooms:

  • Are available for dancers and signs will be posted. 

  • Change rooms backstage will be exclusively for quick changes. 

 

Rehearsal Space:

  • Is available in the Mead building with a stereo system available. 

  • Friday Solo/Duet practice will be available back stage.

 

Adjudication Rules:

  • The Adjudicator will be respected and is not to be approached at any time.   

  • Medals will be awarded as follows:

    • Bronze with a mark of 75 and over

    • Silver with a mark of 80 and over

    • Gold with a mark of 90 and over

  • All marks are at the discretion of the adjudicator and are FINAL. 

  • Scholarships are awarded according to dance marks and the adjudicator’s choice.

  • Video adjudication will be forwarded to the instructor or club as soon as possible, please include the email address on entry form.

 

The Festival Committee, Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association, and Lakeland College are not responsible for any injuries incurred during the festival

The Town of Vermilion is in East Central Alberta located on Highway 16 approximately 60 kilometers from the Saskatchewan border and 200 kilometers east of Edmonton, AB.  Vermilion and the Lakeland College have many amenities for participants and their families.  The Alumni Theatre Hall is an intimate theatre that has a capacity for 443 people between the main level and balcony seating and a beautiful large stage with stage lighting to highlight the spectacular dancers!
